Claude usage limits: permanent 25% increase starting September 14, temporary 50% boost ending September 13

Starting September 14, Anthropic is permanently raising Claude Code’s standard weekly limits by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. That sounds good. It isn’t, really.

Here’s the math: back in May, Anthropic quietly introduced a temporary 50% boost to weekly limits. They’ve extended it several times since. On September 14, that temporary boost ends and the permanent 25% increase takes its place. Compared to what users have right now, that’s a 17% reduction in available usage.

Anthropic’s initial announcement didn’t mention any of this. It framed the change as a win - a permanent increase - without acknowledging that users would be getting less than they’re used to. The original post was deleted and reworded after pushback, with Anthropic eventually admitting the net effect in a follow-up. The revised messaging was more honest, but the damage was already done.

There is one small piece of good news buried in the announcement: the separate weekly limit for Claude’s Opus model (sometimes called Fable internally) is being removed on September 14, so users can apply their full limit to whichever model they prefer.

The likely explanation for the cut is compute pressure. Anthropic has been diverting capacity toward higher-margin enterprise API customers, and the subsidized limits that attracted developers in the first place are getting squeezed as a result.

Developer Theo Browne put together a version of what the announcement should have said:

“Back in May, we did a one-month promotion where we increased the weekly rate limits for Claude Code by 50%. We’ve extended this promotion multiple times since, but sadly, it must come to an end on September 14th. We know that this will impact the work of many users. We’ve run the numbers and found that we are able to make a permanent increase of 25%. This nets out to a 17% decrease from the limits as they are today.”

That’s it. That’s all it needed to be. The actual change might have been frustrating either way, but the framing - announcing a cut as an increase, then deleting the post - is what burned the goodwill.

For now, the current 50% boost stays in place through September 13. After that, expect roughly a sixth less usage than you’re getting today.

Community take

Commenters largely see this as a rate limit cut dressed up as an increase, pointing out that going from a 50% temporary boost to a 25% permanent one is roughly a 17% net decrease for current users, and many are frustrated by the misleading framing.

Questions this post answers

  1. Is Claude's usage limit going up or down on September 14?
Both, depending on your reference point. Anthropic is permanently raising standard weekly usage limits by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans starting September 14, but a temporary 50% increase currently in effect expires September 13. So compared to what users have right now, the effective limit drops by about 25%, even though the new permanent baseline is higher than the original pre-boost limit.

  2. When does Anthropic's temporary Claude usage boost end?
The temporary 50% increase to Claude usage limits ends on September 13. Starting the next day, September 14, the permanent baseline limit rises by 25% instead, which is lower than the temporary boosted level users have been experiencing.
