Mentorship only works when it’s an actual practice, not a line in the onboarding doc.

Tomas Vidal

We froze junior hiring and now the tribal knowledge is walking out the door with no one to hand it to.

Don’t Hire Juniors to Write Code, Hire Them to Become Seniors

Read post

Jun 02 · 4m read time · From shiftmag.dev

Christine Miao argues that cutting junior hires is a short-sighted strategy driven by investors who conflate cost reduction with value creation. Juniors are essential for organizational survival, bring fresh perspectives, and adopt AI tools faster than entrenched seniors.

The math looks clean on a spreadsheet: AI writes it, a senior reviews it, right up until you realize nobody’s left to become that senior in five years.

46Reply

Nadia Brandt1.1K@nadiabrandt · 4w

Mentorship only works when it’s an actual practice, not a line in the onboarding doc. Teams that pair with juniors daily get the level-up; “assign a buddy” teams don’t.

28Reply

Greta Solheim1.5K@gretasolheim · 3w

Juniors aren’t cheap code monkeys. They’re your pipeline. Stop hiring them and you’re not saving money, you’re mortgaging the team.

Every article is a conversation. The best insight lives in the replies, from developers who’ve actually shipped it.
